The Tape Movie

A #MeToo era film, exploring the dynamics of coercion and gray area of sexual abuse.

Based on true events and set in New York City, TAPE addresses burning societal curiosities, taking the audience inside the audition room where questionable behavior goes unseen, answering the question “how could this kind of thing happen?” More than a film, TAPE is a visceral moment-by-moment unveiling of the way ambitious women are systematically coerced and taken advantage of in Hollywood.

Our team worked closely with Director and Screenwriter Deborah Kampmeier (Hounddog, Virgin, Split) and Actress and Producer Annarosa Mudd to create and activate TAPE’s brand strategy, identity and messaging across key channels, social platforms and streaming services, as well as for the film’s virtual red carpet and premiere in March and April of 2020.

Purpose:
TAPE is the story of two aspiring actresses who cross paths with the darker side of the entertainment industry.

BRAND BELIEFS

You don’t have to be the “perfect victim” to have your truth honored.

The truth of women’s lives are complex, embodied, messy, charged and diverse. The stories we tell as—and about— women must represent the whole, sometimes uncomfortable truth of our experience. TAPE shows what happens in the room and uniquely contributes to the perspective of the gray area of coercion. There is a possibility that a majority of women have experienced this grey area but don't feel they have the right to speak about it

Silencing women is an act of violence. .

Oftentimes the silencing of a woman's voice after an act of violence or coercion can be as damaging as the act itself. Reclaiming and sharing your own story is a brave, political and healing act. It explodes the patriarchal gaze and formula, catalyzes change, and creates space to amplify more of our stories. The survival of our earth depends on women’s stories being told.

Patriarchal culture shapes our behavior and choice.

In the process of trying to meet the male gaze we perform instead of experience our lives. The training

by the male gaze causes women to turn away from their instincts and intuition cutting off parts of themselves like their hands and their tongues, their rage, grief, pain, sexuality and truth.

Men must carry this too.

We call upon men to go beyond recognizing our experiences—and begin sharing them with us. It’s time to shoulder this burden together, and begin the transference and co-ownership of this shame. This is still the missing piece.

“With our film TAPE, the weeks Emily spent meeting with our team and drilling down into intention led to our ability to present our film to the world in the most authentic and exciting way possible. Emily has the rare ability to go deep into the conscious and unconscious meaning and therefore message of a company (in our case film) and its creators. She generates a safe container to battle through uncertainty allowing a company to reach clarity and confidence. Clear guidelines were developed for every aspect of bringing our film to market. We had a cohesive and gorgeous visual language for all of our design elements, from our graphics, to our trailer, website, and social media assets. And most importantly, we knew how to speak about our potentially controversial film in a way that engaged the audience, and honored the film as well as ourselves. We are so grateful to Emily and her team at Made Manifest Brands for excavating the brand inside our work that was waiting to be revealed.”

“It is the culture that we as women live in,” said Deborah Kampmeier, the director of “Tape,” in an interview. “It’s right now. It’s not back then.”
